The Registered Manager Gap

We analysed the leadership position of every children's home on the Ofsted register in England. What we found is why this is the most consequential hire you will make.

4,480Children’s homes on the Ofsted register in England
828Operating with no registered manager in post
26.9%Of those homes are rated Requires Improvement or Inadequate, against 8.7% of homes with a manager in post
2.6%Reach Outstanding without a manager in post, against 14.4% of homes that have one

Homes without a registered manager in post are around three times more likely to hold a Requires Improvement or Inadequate judgement, and roughly five times less likely to be rated Outstanding. Leadership is not one factor among many. It is the thing Ofsted examines first and the thing your whole staff team steadies itself around.

We hold and refresh this picture nationally. It means when you call us about a registered manager vacancy, we are not starting with a keyword search. We already understand your region, who you are competing against for candidates, and who is genuinely available.

Three Specialisms, One Desk

Residential is a specialism, not a side desk on a generalist agency's floor plan

Registered Managers

Leaders who can hold a home. We recruit against what registration actually demands, not against a CV: the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare, evidenced experience of inspection, and the resilience to stay through a difficult quarter rather than resign in the middle of one.

Residential Workers

Children’s residential practitioners who understand trauma, attachment and de-escalation, and who know what a hard shift actually looks like. Level 3 Diploma qualified or working towards it, with the emotional stamina for sleep-ins, waking nights and the weeks that do not go to plan.

Support Workers

Learning disability, autism, mental health and complex needs support across residential and supported living. Values-led, positive behaviour support aware, and matched to your model of care rather than to whoever is available on the day.

Why Our Placements Stay

Anyone can fill a shift. Staying is a different discipline, and it is built before the placement starts

We match on model of care

A therapeutic home running PACE needs a different practitioner than a 16+ semi-independent service. We ask how you work before we start searching, because a technically qualified mismatch still resigns.

We brief candidates honestly

Occupancy, behaviour profiles, shift patterns, sleep-in rates, the parts of the job that are genuinely hard. Most early drop-outs happen because somebody was sold a role that did not exist.

We screen for stamina

Structured competency questioning on de-escalation, allegation handling, and the real reason they left their last home. Compliance tells you someone is safe to employ. It does not tell you they will last.

We are willing to say no

We would rather tell you we have nobody good this week than send a CV we cannot stand behind. That costs us a fee occasionally. It is the reason clients keep calling.

We stay in it after day one

Check-ins at 48 hours, two weeks and 30 days, with both sides separately. Problems in residential either surface early or they arrive later as a resignation.

We work the passive market

The strongest registered managers are not answering adverts, because they already have a job. Reaching them takes market knowledge and a direct approach, which is precisely what our register analysis is for.

Settings We Cover

Residential looks nothing like itself from one service to the next. We recruit for the differences

Children's Homes

EBD, complex trauma, solo placements and sibling groups. Registered provision inspected under the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015.

Residential Special Schools

Care staff and residential leadership for 38, 46 and 52 week provision alongside the education team.

Secure & Welfare Provision

Experienced practitioners for secure children's homes and welfare placements where risk is at its highest.

Semi-Independent & 16+

Key workers and support staff for supported accommodation, leaving care and transition services.

Learning Disability & Autism

Residential and supported living services, including PBS-led provision and 1:1 and 2:1 packages.

Adult Residential

Registered managers and care staff for adult residential and complex needs services regulated by CQC.

Safer Recruitment, Done Properly

Every residential candidate we present is vetted to the standard the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 expects, with a Schedule 2 compliant file that stands up when an inspector asks to see it.

We do not present a candidate while checks are outstanding and describe them as cleared. If something is still in progress you will be told which item, and when it is expected.

For adult residential services we vet to CQC expectations on the same principle: the file is complete, current, and yours to inspect at any point.

Enhanced DBS with the children's barred list check
Full employment history with every gap accounted for
Two references including the most recent employer
Child protection and conduct confirmed in writing
Right to work verified at source, never on a photocopy
Level 3 and Level 5 Diploma verification
Schedule 2 compliant files, ready for inspection
Safeguarding, PBS and restraint training records

How We Work

One consultant, start to finish. No handover, nobody to hide behind

01

Understand the Home

Your model of care, your team, your occupancy and the pressures you are actually under. We would rather ask too many questions now than send the wrong person later.

02

Search & Vet

Active and passive candidates approached directly, screened on competence and stamina, then vetted to Schedule 2 standard before you see a single CV.

03

Place & Hold

Honest briefing on both sides, then structured check-ins at 48 hours, two weeks and 30 days so small problems get resolved instead of becoming resignations.

Questions Clients Ask Us

Straight answers, including the ones that are not flattering

How quickly can you place a registered manager?

Faster than a job advert, because we are not starting from zero. We hold a live picture of the registered manager position across the children's homes register in England, so we already know who is registered where, which providers are carrying vacancies, and who in your region is realistically approachable. Shortlists for a registered manager search typically move in days rather than weeks. Residential worker and support worker vacancies are usually same-week.

Do your registered manager candidates hold the Level 5 Diploma?

We verify qualifications before a CV reaches you, and we tell you plainly where a candidate is part-qualified or working towards completion rather than letting you discover it at interview. For registered manager appointments we also assess against what Ofsted will actually test at the fit person interview, not just what appears on the certificate.

Can you support us through Ofsted registration for a new manager?

Yes. We prepare candidates for the registration process and the fit person interview, and we make sure the evidence Ofsted expects is assembled before the application goes in. We will also be honest with you if we think a candidate is not yet registration-ready for your particular home.

What happens if a placement does not work out?

We own it. Your consultant is the same person from briefing through to review, so there is no handover and nobody to hide behind. If a placement fails we replace as the first priority and we tell you what we got wrong, because a recruiter who cannot explain a failed placement will repeat it.

Do you cover the whole of the UK?

Yes. We recruit residential staff nationally and maintain local supply intelligence at council level, which matters in residential because pay rates, competition and travel realities change significantly between neighbouring authorities.

Can you cover sleep-ins, waking nights and short notice shifts?

Yes. We brief candidates on shift patterns, sleep-in arrangements and rates before they ever accept, which is the single biggest reason our residential placements do not fall over in week one.
